Nevada County in Northern California is best known for its gold rush history.
Then let’s head up and see for ourselves.
Not only can you hear some of the best gold rush stories in the state... but there’s, also, an abundance of other things to do.
Also... there's a wide variety of places to eat... like Cirino's or Friar Tuck's in Nevada City... or Marshall's Pasties in Grass Valley.
Surrounded by deep green hillsides and white church steeples, Nevada City sits at the gateway to the Tahoe National Forest and its many rivers, lakes and trails.
Its downtown historic district is one of the best preserved of all gold rush towns; comprised of more then 90 quaint brick storefronts and Victorian homes.
But... Nevada City is not a museum... it’s a hub of activity.
We can enjoy... live theater, like... the Community Asian Theater - CATS - and The Foothill Theater Company.
Or kick-up-our-heels to live music, like... at Cooper’s Aleworks 235... as well as some others in the area.
Plus there’s... art galleries... spas to be pampered at... and historical buildings and museums.
And let’s not forget... camping... fishing... mountain biking... hiking... and panning for gold.
And that’s just the beginning. There are lots of places to stay... first rate restaurants to pick from... and more.
Whether it is for a weekend getaway or a two week vacation... Nevada City offers lots to choose from.
Here’s some of what we mean... take a look...
Nevada City’s sister city - Grass Valley - is historic for its downtown district... dating from the 1850's.
Boasting of having underground mines that produced more than $900 million in gold during the 1849 gold rush era... makes Grass Valley... California's richest gold rush region.
For example... we mentioned earlier about exploring the 780-acre Empire Mine State Historic Park.
But that’s not all to see.
If you’re a history enthusiast... we can stop by and see the North Star Power House and Pelton Wheel Mining Exhibit.
Imagine... going back in time and seeing the largest Pelton Wheel ever constructed... generate power for mining operations.
Or watching the largest operational Cornish pump - remove water out of the mine shafts so the miners could keep working.
Like being outdoors? Then here’s some fun activities for us. How about... hiking, biking, skiing or boating.
Want to just relax? We can take a leisurely drive along the wild and scenic South Yuba River.
Grass Valley has great cuisine to choose from when we’re hungry, like... Mexican... Chinese... Japanese... Thai and Italian.
But... that’s not all. Nevada County, also, offers Swiss... German... Cornish... Creole... and more.
So picture yourself... coming to Nevada County and treating your palate to a trip around the world.
...just 200 miles northeast of San Francisco... 100 miles
east of Sacramento, California... 40 miles west of Reno, Nevada... and 12 miles north of Lake Tahoe, California... Truckee’s centrally located for exploring the beauty of the High Sierra, Nevada County, and more.
Check out that breath-taking view of Lake Tahoe... or the historic state parks... and the abundance of emigrant and Old West history.
Like... Donner Memorial State Park. The story of the ill-fated passage of the Donner Party in 1846; stranded and hopeless... those settlers fought starvation during that harsh winter when they were snow-bound in the Sierra Nevadas and couldn’t get help.
For those of us with an adventurous spirit... Truckee is the ideal playground for a wide range of activities.
Such as... their world-class ski resorts... hosting incredible events throughout the winter.
Like... rail jams, ski and boarder-cross action, big air competitions, clinics and demo days, live music series... and more.
Want a slower pace... how about playing a round of golf at one of the resorts.
Or taking in the sights with a scenic flight or a day fishing - when it’s in season... of course.
There’s always something to do in Truckee, how about taking the kids horseback riding at Greenhorn Creek Guest Ranch...
...or whitewater rafting down the Truckee River... and more.
Whether you’re into skiing, snowboarding, sledding or skating, or just curling up by a cozy fireplace, Truckee has something for your whole family.
So we can stay and play as long as we'd like.
Want an evening of wining and dining? Or a barbeque at the cabin or lake?
Truckee has that too. Their restaurants run the gamut from a corner pub to five-star dining, even sushi!
How about... spending the night! We can try some of the cozy comfortable lodges like... Truckee Donner Lodge. It’s nestled in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains just a few minutes from Lake Tahoe... a perfect place to slow down... breathe... and unwind.
Whether you like... indoors, outdoors, daytime, nighttime, there’s LOTS to do in Nevada County.
So what do you say... let’s go have fun!
