Production of White Zinfandel

San Joaquin wineries! Are you ready to explore? Okay then... let’s go!

A wine lover’s paradise, it’s the birthplace of great wines.

The San Joaquin Valley specializes in heat-tolerant variety grapes with notable fruitiness similar to those found in southwest Australia, Spain and Southern Italy.

Grapes such as sauvignon blanc and zinfandel thrive here.

And did you know that California's Central Valley is home to the largest production of white zinfandel?

From the 1930’s until today, every variety and style of wine comes from the adaptable vineyards of the San Joaquin Valley.

Of all the San Joaquin wineries, according to Sacramento Wine Region, the following list offers complimentary wine tastings, picnic areas and tours...

Now... even though the following wineries claim to offer FREE complimentary tastings, picnic areas, and tours, it might be a good idea to call ahead and ask before going.

Afterall... things DO change.

What makes this winery stand out from the rest is the owners Tom and Carmela. I love all the events with live music.

You can bring a picnic and take the 3/4 mile walk down to the Mokelumne River. Its a beautiful walk just be sure to get a map from the tasting room.

And they are so friendly and hospitable that they make you feel like part of the family.

Shannan L of Sacramento CA says...

Lucas is classy but approachable. I am not a seasoned wine aficionado, so I appreciate places that don't make me feel like I should already know everything about wine just to have a taste.

David Lucas, the owner himself, greeted all who entered and gave a red rose to every lady on Wine & Chocolate Weekend.

It was a nice touch, and he immediately put us at ease. Now, onto the wine. It is outstanding! We brought home a bottle of the Zinstar, and I regret not picking up their amazing dessert wine.

It's sweet like a port but isn't actually a port. Let them tell you about their fancy process to make it. Meanwhile, taste a chocolate truffle between sips. Delish!

FREE wine tasting? YES PLEASE!

You can pay $10 for the reserve tasting or taste all the other ones absolutely FREE.

Stepped in about 20 minutes before closing, but the bartenders were accommodating and welcoming. Poured about 7 glasses apiece for me and my friends which, to say the least, was welcomed with open arms.

There are some wines which I didn't know were produced by Michael-David and were surprisingly great! For those that like lighter, sweeter whites, I suggest trying the Symphony wine. Muscat and something else combined by one of the UC schools for a GREAT tasting wine!

After tasting all of the reds, I've got to say that the Seven Deadly Zins is still my favorite by far.

Fun tasting! Fossils and jewelry to boot.

Visit Vino Piazza and don't miss this winery. This was our last stop on EBWT4, and was pleased we didn't pass it up. The tasting was an array of full bodied wines. Cab-Shiraz blend came home and was delicious. The Petite Verdot is lying in wait. Looking forward to it too!

The shop itself is just an interesting place to taste. There's just so much to look at from the T-rex on the front door to the skeletons in the back. The tasting session was a lot of fun and free! We learned a bit about how the company does it's thing, and the area in general.

Bottom line is, I-5 puts you close enough that a visit to Vino Piazza is worth it, and Olde Lockeford Winery is a must visit. Remember it's not in Lodi, it's in Lockeford!

We went here after skydiving just up the road. The lady who helped us was very friendly and we tasted a lot of wines (approx 8 in total) for free.

I really enjoyed the whites, which I generally prefer, and others in our party enjoyed many of the reds, so all in all there was something for everyone.
